Shaina: First day in the Bahamas! After a short plane ride we landed
in the beautiful Bahamas and although we weren’t greeted with leis and coconut
drinks with tiny umbrellas in them we were excited none the less. We met our
lovely tour guide, Jude, who showed us a little of Nassau’s history and took us
to our hotel. After settling in and exploring our new beach home we all met on
the roof to have our first group meeting where we played ice breakers and card
games, got to know each other, went over the itinerary, and shared what we were
all looking forward to experiencing on the trip. I can’t wait to get to know
this amazing group of people better and learn more about what each of us can do to
lessen our impact on the environment.
Kevin: After getting off the plane, we were greeted nicely with the charm and hospitality of the locals of the Bahamas. Our bus driver, Jude, was the first person to be very welcoming to us. Once we boarded the bus to the hotel, Jude immediately gave us a warm welcome to the Bahamas and happily told us information about the country and its people. The hotel we are staying in provided a pleasant setting that was appropriate for the trip participants to meet and engage in reflection that evening, where we could learn more about each others' backgrounds and reflect upon what is to come for the rest of the trip. We played fun games and activities that got everybody to be familiar with each others' names and learn about the diversity within the group.
Mayhah: I’m finally in the Bahamas! The second we stepped out of the airport I could not stop smiling—the weather was perfect, and I was in a brand new place. It’s so exciting to be surrounded by new, open-minded people who are adventurous and interested in the same things as me. It’s incredible that the view out of the bus window is the same as the screensaver on my computer. Near the airport, there is a new hotel/resort under construction called Bahamar. It looks like it will be bigger than Atlantis. It seemed a little sad that such a large part of the coastline was being dedicated to even more commercialization. Regardless, I can’t wait to see more of the Bahamas and learn more about the country.
